Customizing Coffee Mugs with Vinyl and a Cricut

There's nothing quite like starting your day with a hot cup of coffee or tea, and what better way to enjoy your favorite beverage than with a personalized DIY coffee mug? With just a few simple supplies, you can create a unique and customized mug that's perfect for yourself or as a gift for someone special. In this article, we'll show you how to make your own DIY coffee mug, step-by-step. From selecting the right mug and design to applying vinyl and sealing it, you'll have all the information you need to create a beautiful and functional piece of personalized drinkware. So let's get started!

What do you need?

  • A mug of your choice

  • Cricut Explore

  • Cricut Accessories- Scraping tool, adhesive mat

  • Oracal 651 Vinyl

  • Measuring tape

  • Transfer Tape

  • A pair of scissors

What do you have to do?

Step 1: Create Design

  • Log Into Design Space

  • Upload and Customize Your Design. It is a good idea to play around with fonts and try to create your own design. For instance, I used the Curve Button to get my design to look the way I wanted it to. If you want a particular design (SVG file), send me a message and I can create it for you.

  • Click on the Attach Button. Attaching the design makes sure that all the letters cut out together and not separately (which would be really hard to put together later).

  • Unlock the Design

  • Enter the Dimensions That You Need

  • Make It

Step 2: Cleaning Up the Design

  • Once the design is cut, there will be a lot of negative spaces around it. You will need to carefully remove the unwanted vinyl. This is called weeding the design.

Step 3: Get the Design Onto the Transfer Tape

  • Prepare the Transfer Tape

  • Get the Transfer Tape Onto the Design

  • Stick It Well

Step 4: Place the Design on the Mug

  • Carefully place the design on the mug. You will need to get it to stick to the mug really well. Run your fingers all over the design to smoothen it out completely.

  • Remove the Transfer Tape. Do not throw it away. It is reusable. Save it for the next project.
